Looking natural on camera is a writing problem, not a performance one

The advice for looking natural on camera is nearly always about performance: relax your shoulders, smile with your eyes, imagine you are talking to a friend. None of it helps, because the problem is not your face. It is that you have not decided what you are going to say, and your face is honestly reporting that.

What people actually see

Viewers are very good at spotting hesitation and very bad at explaining it. What reads as awkward on camera is almost always one of four specific things, and each has a mechanical fix that has nothing to do with confidence.

What it looks like What it actually is The fix
Shifty, not trustworthy Your eyes are travelling to notes beside the lens Put the words directly under the camera
Nervous, rushed You are racing to finish before you lose your place Know the next line exists, so there is nothing to lose
Stiff, over-rehearsed You memorised it and are now reciting Read it instead. Reading is warmer than reciting
Rambling, no point You are deciding the structure while talking Decide it beforehand, in thirty seconds of talking

Reading aloud is not cheating

There is a belief that reading a script makes you sound fake and that the honest version is off the cuff. It is the wrong way round. Every newsreader, every ad, every explainer you have ever found clear was read off something. What sounds fake is not reading, it is reading badly: reading a document rather than reading speech.

The difference is in the writing. A sentence written to be read on a page has clauses stacked inside it and words nobody says out loud. A sentence written to be spoken is short, starts with the point, and uses the words you would use standing in front of somebody. Write the second kind and reading it sounds like talking, because it is.

The thirty seconds that does the work

The part worth being deliberate about is not the recording. It is the half minute before it, where you say out loud what you are trying to get across and to whom. Not writing, talking. If you cannot say the point of the video in one sentence to yourself, the camera will not rescue it.

Most people skip this because it feels like procrastinating. It is the opposite. Thirty seconds of deciding removes the four problems in the table above at once, because all four are downstream of not having decided.

What still goes wrong, and does not matter

You will stumble on a word. You will start a sentence twice. Your dog will bark. None of it matters, because you are not live: you record the section again, and the take that works is the one that ships. The pressure people put on a single unbroken performance is imported from public speaking, where there is no second attempt. On a phone there always is.

The short answer

You do not look awkward because you are bad on camera. You look awkward because you are composing and performing at the same time, and it shows on your face. Separate the two jobs. Decide what you are saying, put the words near the lens, and read them the way you talk. The version people call natural is nearly always the one that was written down first.

Talk your idea into a video
